In order to identify the three barriers which are slowing down the progress of gender equality in the workplace, we visited Japan, where machoism is king. We met with Emmanuel Blin, the CEO of Brystol Myers Squibb in Japan. He told us about the difficulty of overcoming the masculine codes of conduct which prevail in Japanese work culture. This is only one aspect of the problem though. Women have to break through their interior barriers in order to take charge – something Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, strongly argues for. Of course, this would be much easier if companies adapted their organization and work hours to what can only be called the double life of women. ING Direct recently adapted themselves in this manner and the female manager of one of its branches could only accept her executive role if she was able to reconcile private and work life.
