To get a clear idea of Indonesia’s economic boom, we visited the home of Sphinx, a Jakarta resident and Aikido teacher, a new member of Indonesia’s middle class. His home resembles Ali Baba’s cave, with a high-tech spin. Sphinx is the personification of the country’s fifteen year-long economic boom. One of the first European companies to bet on Indonesia’s success is Danone. We met with its CEO, Frank Riboud, who explained how his company became the world’s leader in the bottled water industry through his partnership with Aqua, a local company. A true stroke of genius. Today, car-maker Renault is trying to make it in this prosperous country with its flagship product, the Duster, through a partnership with Indomobil. However, Indonesia doesn’t only attract multinational corporations: SMEs, such as Marc Steinmeyer’s hostelry company can also make it big and conquer new markets.
